MY NOMINEES ARE:

Julia's Questions to me:

1. What is your favorite subject to teach?
I love to teach reading in first grade. They are so eager to learn and I want them to love reading. But with Common Core I am really enjoying teaching Math. This is a hoot because I was never good at math. But I think this gives me an edge in helping struggling mathematicians. I can understand what they don't get and teach them a strategy that helps them "see" what it means.

2. Why did you start blogging?
I was a blog stalker for a long time and as time went on I wanted to add to the conversations and be part of this amazing community of such talented educators. I so enjoy starting my day reading up on new ideas, a different twist to something I do and sharing a common bond with people you wouldn't get to know.

3. What is your favorite part about blogging?
I am at the other end of my teaching years from most of teachers that blog, and the enthusiasm and ideas that are shared keep me charged up with new a fresh outlook. I hope my ideas help others as well. I have to admit it is exciting when someone comments about something you shared, or someone new begins to follow your blog.

4. What do you hope for the future of your blogging?
First, I hope to become better a it! I would like to learn some more HTML so I can jazz up my blog. I would also like my blog to be a resource for public school teachers as well as a help to the Christian teachers who teach at small schools, in small rooms, with big expectations. There often isn't the Christian resources for the younger grades.

5. What is your dream vacation?
My best vacation could be my dream vacation. My husband went on the $25,000 dollar pyramid (Does anyone remember that show?) and won a weeks vacation at a resort in Jamaica. Great beaches, everything paid for and nothing to do. It took me 2 days to really get into doing nothing, but then 'No Problem!'

6. What is you favorite thing to do on the weekends?
I catch up on Pinterest. I like to read, craft and do DIY projects. During the school year, most of these projects tend to be school related. Now that I am going to be a grandma, I'm thinking baby things as well.

7.Where did you go to school?
My dad was in the Marine Corps so growing up I was in school all over the world but mostly in Southern California. I continued the travel bug in college by going to Winona State University in Minnesota before transferring to The University of California, San Diego (UCSD). I received my Masters at the California State University, San Marcos.

8. What is your favorite Children's Book?
My favorite children's book growing up was Beverly Cleary's Books, Ramona and
Henry and Ribsy books. My favorite children's book as a teacher is Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Allsburg. The story is about 2 ants that decide to go off by themselves and is told from the ants perspective. It can be used to teach rules or descriptive writing as well.

9. What is your favorite blog to follow?
I have way too many! Because I teach first grade I tend to follow K and 1st grade blogs, but I have some 2nd grade blogs as well.

10. What accomplishments are you most proud of in your life?
My proudest accomplishment would be one that I didn't do alone. I have the 2 kindest, thoughtful kids, that grew up without doing drugs, getting into trouble, and are now both employed at great jobs. But I know it was with prayer and God's grace that gave my husband and I the guidance we needed.

My personal accomplishment is that I was the first child to graduate from college in my family. Teaching was always my desire but working my way through school I ended up going in a different direction. I had two careers before my first teaching position. But because of a dumb decision of a naive youth, I didn't have a teaching credential. (I never sent the money and the application after I graduated)  So I went back and redid my 5th year over including student teaching and went on to get my Masters in Literacy as well as a Reading Specialist Credential while working, being a wife, and a mother to high schoolers. It was a lot of work but I'm glad I did.

11. Are you married? Do you have kids?
I have been married for 32 years to same wonderful man. He totally understands my passion for whatever I do and allows me the space to dive fully into it. He tells everyone that "Teaching isn't a job, it's a lifestyle. It's part of who you are." Aren't I lucky! I have a married daughter who is going to make me a grandmother in January and a son who a national award in graphic design.

The 11 Random facts about me are:

1. I was born in Norway where my dad (from Georgia)
met and married my mom.
2. I went to 1st and 2nd grade in Taiwan.
3. I worked at Libby during corn harvesting while in Minnesota.
4. I taught myself counted cross stitch and once
won a third place at the county fair for one of my pieces.

  1. I can't believe he WON! That sounds amazing. I didn't take my laptop with me on my first vacation this summer and I had a hard time doing "nothing." So glad I found your blog today :)
